Are you able to share any numeric results with me? For example, of everyone that goes through this program, how many experience positive outcomes of ITR method? Do these outcomes last after six month, one year, etc?
After treatment, what is the plan? How do you make sure that people end treatment in an ok place?
Dear____,
I am the co-founder of the ITR Method. Mary asked me to reply to your questions.
We published one outcome study where we compared the assessments before and after completing the intensive program. Since we did not have large staff we only collected data 1 week, 3 months, and 6 months after treatment. Out of the 78 people in the study, 2 dropped out and 4 did not return their testing. Here are the results for those who did return their assessments
Recovered 45%
Improved 44%
Unchanged 8%
Worse 3%
This was a naturalistic study but the participants were representative of our clinic patients. There were some drawbacks in the study but we felt it more closely reflected what happens in treatment programs than does the result of randomized trials with many exclusion criteria.
We also recognized that self-report doesn’t capture all the critical information that would measure clinical change over a longer time. An assessment about functionality from a third party would be ideal. (We do often get comments from spouses or parents who remark on the changes they see.)
With respect to aftercare, we coordinate with the hometown therapist and make suggestions about how to best continue the work if there are still unprocessed traumas. Making certain a person is in “an ok place” is not only what we want at the end of the intensive but also at the end of each day so the therapists pay attention to grounding and to getting feedback about what the person needs that might alter the treatment plan.
We have more outcome data than we have published but the general trends are the same. Of course, there are the usual problems with getting people to return their paperwork but that is something that we are trying to address.
I hope this answers your questions. Please let me know if you have others.
All the best,
Linda Gantt
