Chief Robert McCullough and the executive team of the Baltimore County Police Department completed the Accelerated Traumatology Course 101 from the ITR Training Institute on June 4th.

A few months ago, 60 sworn officers and professional staff from the BCPD peer support program were trained in the same course. The training covered how to be trauma-effective, the neuroscience of trauma, and the hard-wired biological response to trauma known as the Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR).

With the assistance of Ronda McCoy, Chief Edward Jackson ensured that the entire Annapolis Police Department received trauma-effective training a year ago.

“What we saw was lacking was trauma training for our officers. I took the class and said, ‘This will be wonderful for our department,’ and we did what we needed to do to get it here,” said Retired Major Ronda McCoy.

We commend the Baltimore County Police Department and the Annapolis Police Department for their proactive approach to mental health and for equipping their teams to be trauma-effective.

We are proud to collaborate with these brave men and women who risk their lives to protect us. We look forward to partnering with more police and fire departments in Maryland and across the country.
